Visualization of Pre-Chamber Combustion and Main Chamber Jets with a Narrow Throat Pre-Chamber

Pre-chamber combustion (PCC) has re-emerged in recent last years as a potential solution to help to decarbonize the transport sector with its improved engine efficiency as well as providing lower emissions. Research into the combustion process inside the pre-chamber is still a challenge due to the high pressure and temperatures, the geometrical restrictions, and the short combustion durations. Some fundamental studies in constant volume combustion chambers (CVCC) at low and medium working pressures have shown the complexity of the process and the influence of high pressures on the turbulence levels. In this study, the pre-chamber combustion process was investigated by combustion visualization in an optically-accessible pre-chamber under engine relevant conditions and linked with the jet emergence inside the main chamber. The pre-chamber geometry has a narrow-throat. The total nozzle area is distributed in two six-hole rows of nozzle holes.

Prediction of ECN Spray—A Characteristics Using Machine Learning

Flame lift-off length (FLOL), ignition delay time (IDT), liquid length (LL), and Soot are essential parameters defining spray combustion characteristics. They help understand the combustion dynamics and validate the spray and combustion models for numerical simulations. However, obtaining extensive data from experiments is costlier and time-consuming. Machine learning (ML) models have advanced to the point where they could create efficient models that could be used as surrogates for experiments. In this study, five different ML algorithms have been trained using the experimental dataset available through the engine combustion network (ECN) community. A novel genetic algorithm-based hyperparameter optimization code has been used to optimize the models to improve prediction accuracy. The model performances were compared, and the better model was chosen as an experimental surrogate to predict FLOL, IDT, LL, and Soot.

Compression Ignition of Low Octane Gasoline under Partially Premixed Combustion Mode

Partially premixed combustion (PPC) is an operating mode that lies between the conventional compression ignition (CI) mode and homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) mode. The combustion in this mixed mode is complex as it is neither diffusion-controlled (CI mode) nor governed solely by chemical kinetics (HCCI mode). In this study, CFD simulations were performed to evaluate flame index, which distinguishes between zones having a premixed flame and non-premixed flame. Experiments performed in the optical engine supplied data to validate the model. In order to realize PPC, the start of injection (SOI) was fixed at −40 CAD (aTDC) so that a required ignition delay is created to premix air/fuel mixture. The reference operating point was selected to be with 3 bar IMEP and 1200 rpm. Naphtha with a RON of 77 and its corresponding PRF surrogate were tested. The simulations captured the general trends observed in the experiments well.

Effect of Mixture Formation and Injection Strategies on Stochastic Pre-Ignition

Stochastic pre-ignition remains one of the major barriers limiting further engine downsizing and down-speeding; two widely used strategies for improving the efficiency of spark-ignited engines. One of the most cited mechanisms thought to be responsible for pre-ignition is the ignition of a rogue droplet composed of lubricant oil and fuel. This originates during mixture formation from interactions between the fuel spray and oil on the cylinder liner. In the present study, this hypothesis is further examined using a single cylinder supercharged engine which employs a range of air-fuel mixture formation strategies. These strategies include port-fuel injection (PFI) along with side and central direct injection (DI) of an E5 gasoline (RON 97.5) using single and multiple injection events. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) calculations are then used to explain the observed trends.

2-Stroke Engine Options for Automotive Use: A Fundamental Comparison of Different Potential Scavenging Arrangements for Medium-Duty Truck Applications

The work presented here seeks to compare different means of providing scavenging systems for an automotive 2-stroke engine. It follows on from previous work solely investigating uniflow scavenging systems, and aims to provide context for the results discovered there as well as to assess the benefits of a new scavenging system: the reverse-uniflow sleeve-valve. For the study the general performance of the engine was taken to be suitable to power a medium-duty truck, and all of the concepts discussed here were compared in terms of indicated fuel consumption for the same cylinder swept volume using a one-dimensional engine simulation package. In order to investigate the sleeve-valve designs layout drawings and analysis of the Rolls-Royce Crecy-type sleeve had to be undertaken.

Octane-on-Demand as an Enabler for Highly Efficient Spark Ignition Engines and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Improvement

This paper explores the potential for reducing transport-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by introducing high-efficiency spark-ignition engines with a dual-fuel injection system to customize the octane of the fuels based on real-time engine requirements. It is assumed that a vehicle was equipped with two fuel tanks and two injection systems; one port fuel injection and one direct injection line separately. Each tank carried low octane and high octane fuel so that real-time octane blending was occurred in the combustion chamber when needed (Octane On-Demand: OOD). A refinery naphtha was selected for low octane fuel (RON=61), because of its similarity to gasoline properties but a less processed, easier to produce without changing a refinery configuration. Three oxygenates were used for high octane knock-resistant fuels in a direct injection line: methanol, MTBE, and ETBE.

A Study of Lean Burn Pre-Chamber Concept in a Heavy Duty Engine

Due to stringent emission standards, the demand for higher efficiency engines has been unprecedentedly high in recent years. Among several existing combustion modes, pre-chamber spark ignition (PCSI) emerges to be a potential candidate for high-efficiency engines. Research on the pre-chamber concept exhibit higher indicated efficiency through lean limit extension while maintaining the combustion stability. In this study, a unique pre-chamber geometry was tested in a single-cylinder heavy-duty engine at low load lean conditions. The geometry features a narrow throat, which was designed to be packaged inside a commercial diesel injector pocket. The pre-chamber was fueled with methane while the main chamber was supplied with an ethanol/air mixture.

Optical Diagnostics of Pre-Chamber Combustion with Flat and Bowl-In Piston Combustion Chamber

Pre-chamber Combustion (PCC) extends the lean operation limit operation of spark ignition (SI) engines, thus it has been of interest for researchers as a pathway for increased efficiency and reduced emissions. Optical diagnostic techniques are essential to understand the combustion process, but the engine components such as the piston geometry, are often different from real engines to maximize the optical access. In this study, ignition and subsequent main chamber combustion are compared in an optically accessible PCC engine equipped with a “flat” and a real engine-like “bowl” piston geometry. An active fueled narrow throat pre-chamber was used as the ignition source of the charge in the main-chamber, and both chambers were fueled with methane. Three pre-chamber fuel effective mean pressure (FuelMEP) ratios (PCFR) namely 6%, 9% and 11% of the total amount of fuel were tested at two global excess air ratios (λ) at values of 1.8 and 2.0.

Parametric Study to Optimize Gasoline Compression Ignition Operation under Medium Load-Conditions

Gasoline compression ignition (GCI) pertains to high efficiency lean burn compression ignition with gasoline fuels, where ignition is controlled by mixture’s auto-ignition chemistry as well as local mixture strength. The presented GCI combustion strategy is based on a multi-mode combustion strategy at various operating conditions. This study presents a part of work on the development of an optimum combustion strategy at medium loading condition for commercial gasoline fuel with research octane number (RON) = 91. The single cylinder engine with a compression ratio (CR) = 16 features a centrally mounted multi-hole injector with a spark plug at a distance from the injector under shallow pent-roof combustion chamber design. The design of combustion chamber and piston was previously optimized based on CFD numerical analysis.

Study on the Pre-Chamber Fueling Ratio Effect on the Main Chamber Combustion Using Simultaneous PLIF and OH* Chemiluminescence Imaging

Pre-chamber combustion (PCC) enables leaner air-fuel ratio operation by improving its ignitability and extending flammability limit, and consequently, offers better thermal efficiency than conventional spark ignition operation. The geometry and fuel concentration of the pre-chamber (PC) is one of the major parameters that affect overall performance. To understand the dynamics of the PCC in practical engine conditions, this study focused on (i) correlation of the events in the main chamber (MC) with the measured in-cylinder pressure traces and, (ii) the effect of fuel concentration on the MC combustion characteristics using laser diagnostics. We performed simultaneous acetone planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) from the side, and OH* chemiluminescence imaging from the bottom in a heavy-duty optical engine. Two different PC Fueling Ratios (PCFR, the ratio of PC fuel to the total fuel), 7%, and 13%, were investigated.

The Effects of Piston Shape in a Narrow-Throat Pre-Chamber Engine

The current work utilizes computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to assess the effects of different piston geometries in an active-type pre-chamber combustion engine fueled with methane. Previous works identified that the interaction of the jets with the main chamber flow and piston wall are key aspects for the local turbulent flame speed and overall burning duration. The combustion process is simulated with the G-equation model for flame propagation combined with the MZ-WSR model to determine the post-flame composition and to predict possible auto-ignition of the reactant mixture. Four setups were considered: two bowl-shaped and one flat piston, and one additional case of the flat piston with jets at wider jet angles to the cylinder axis. The results show that premature jet-wall interaction impacts the main chamber pressure build-up, turbulence, and burn rate.

Numerical Investigation of the Effects of Piston Design and Injection Strategy on Passive Pre-chamber Enrichment

The pre-chamber combustion can extend the lean limit of internal combustion engines (ICE) and hence increase their overall efficiency. Compared to active pre-chambers equipped with an auxiliary fuel supply system, passive pre-chambers have lower manufacturing costs and require minimal or no design modifications to the conventional spark plug engines. The major challenge of the passive pre-chamber is to extend the lean limit as much as the active pre-chamber. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted on a light-duty single-cylinder engine geometry fitted with a passive pre-chamber and using iso-octane as fuel to investigate and optimize the passive pre-chamber fuel enrichment through the pre-chamber nozzles. The non-reacting flow simulations were performed from the intake valve open (IVO) to spark timing.

Effects of Engine Speed on Prechamber-Assisted Combustion

Lean combustion technologies show promise for improving engine efficiency and reducing emissions. Among these technologies, prechamber-assisted combustion (PCC) is established as a reliable option for achieving lean or ultra-lean combustion. In this study, the effect of engine speed on PCC was investigated in a naturally aspirated heavy-duty optical engine: a comparison has been made between analytical performances and optical flame behavior. Bottom view natural flame luminosity (NFL) imaging was used to observe the combustion process. The prechamber was fueled with methane, while the main chamber was fueled with methanol. The engine speed was varied at 1000, 1100, and 1200 revolutions per minute (rpm). The combustion in the prechamber is not affected by changes in engine speed. However, the heat release rate (HRR) in the main chamber changed from two distinct stages with a faster first stage to more gradual and merged stages as the engine speed increased.

Gas Dynamics of Spark-Ignited Pre-Chamber Assisted Engine: PIV Study

In recent years lean-burn technologies have acquired center stage in engine research due to stringent emission norms. Among such technologies, pre-chamber assisted combustion (PCC) has gained much attention for its ability to allow ultra-lean engine operation (λ > 2). The spark-ignited pre-chambers engines allow such lean operation by inducing a strong charge stratification, enhancing turbulence generation, and multipoint ignition. Adding a pre-chamber igniter to the engine alters the in-cylinder flow fields as mass is exchanged between the pre-chamber and the main chamber. This study reports the main chamber flow fields of methane fuelled heavy-duty optical engine fitted with a narrow throat active prechamber. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) at 10 Hz is performed from the side view using TiO2 particle seeding.

Computational Assessment of Ammonia as a Fuel for Light-Duty SI Engines

To understand key practical aspects of ammonia as a fuel for internal combustion engines, three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed using CONVERGETM. A light-duty single-cylinder research engine with a geometrical compression ratio of 11.5 and a conventional pentroof combustion chamber was experimentally operated at stoichiometry. The fumigated ammonia was introduced at the intake plenum. Upon model validation, additional sensitivity analysis was performed. The combustion was modeled using a detailed chemistry solver (SAGE), and the ammonia oxidation was computed from a 38-specie and 262-reaction chemical reaction mechanism. Three different piston shapes were assessed, and it was found that the near-spark flow field associated with the piston design in combination with the tumble motion promotes faster combustion and yields enhanced engine performance.
